UB Mingoes stay undefeated in NPBA action

A total of five University of The Bahamas (UB) men’s basketball players scored in double figures as the UB Mingoes defeated the BIBT Great Whites, 73-62, to remain undefeated in the New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA), on Wednesday at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium.

Robert Joseph dropped in 17 points and added five rebounds to lead the Mingoes to the win. Christoph McKenzie had 15 points and seven assists; Romero Cornish scored 13 points with nine boards; and Rus-Shorn Strachan scored 10. Rashad Sturrup led all rebounders with 14 to go along with 12 points.

The Mingoes remain undefeated with a 3-0 win-loss record in the NPBA Division I. The Great Whites dropped to a winless 0-3.

Nathan Sullivan scored 22 points to lead the Great Whites in the loss. Jason Collie had 13 points and Jerard Ferguson added 12.

The Mingoes dominated the contest from the opening tip. Sturrup had a quick pull-up jumper to put the Mingoes up 2-0 and they never really looked back. Despite ties early in the game, the Mingoes controlled the game and held a double-digit lead for most of the first half.

The Mingoes had 26 fast-break points in the win and out-rebounded the Great Whites, 61-48.

Joseph said the Mingoes relied mostly on their inside game to pick up the win.

“We barely could hit any outside shots so we started driving and dumping off to score,” he said. The Mingoes scored 40 points in the paint on the night. “This win keeps us motivated for the rest of the season.”

McKenzie added that the team’s game plan was simple. “We listened to coach and we pushed and executed the plays,” he said. “We were pushing the ball hard as well.”

The Mingoes next play in the NPBA on Saturday against the Rockets at 9 p.m. and then play an international two-game set in December.
