Along Life's Road

We are to be examples of kindness, purity and love

“And drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ.” – 1 Corinthians 10:4

How quickly the days of 2019 up until now have accelerated. Why, it seems as if it was just the other month workers were placing Christmas decorations at the roundabouts – and here they go again. I wonder how Edward Caswall of two-plus centuries ago would pen his beloved hymn “Days and moments quickly flying”. Remember when we were young, and we thought Christmas would never ever come?

Also growing up in Sunday school, we used to sing a chorus, “I’ve got a sword in my hand and I’m going to use it well.” Whether it was the right or the left hand, we extended it to its full length and authoritatively waved it in a semi- circle. We also got to extend our hands when, during Bible drill, we were told to draw swords and quickly find the scripture that was sounded forth by the Bible drill leader.

All in all, Sunday school was the “in thing” and many today who have managed to survive the onslaught of the vicissitudes and trials of this sojourn here on planet earth, called life, owe it to faithful Bible teachers of yesterday.

In our text today, the Apostle Paul tells us that although we live in the world, we do not fight from worldly motives. The weapons we use in our fight are not the world’s weapons, but God’s powerful weapons, which we use to destroy strongholds. We destroy false arguments. We pull down every proud and boasting obstacle that is raised against the knowledge of God. We take every thought captive and make it obey Christ. And after you have proved your complete loyalty, we will be able to punish any act of disloyalty.

The year thus far may have been rough for you and you are in the dark as to what is happening, but know today that victory is yours if only you follow and believe Christ and exemplify servant leadership. It is not our way, but the way of the cross. The weapons of our warfare are not about bitterness, malice, spite, getting even, bad ways, selfishness, anger and jealousy. As children of God, we are to be examples of kindness, purity and love. Yes, we can rebuke, but rebuke in love, for whom God loves, he chasteneth.

Today, let us draw our swords against injustice and personal wealth instead of public health. Let us cease from reaching upwards to grab everything but rather stoop to conquer poverty and ignorance wherever these evil twins are found.

It is not too late to get good deeds done for it will bode well for your 2020 marathon. Indeed, the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but spiritually powerful.
