Wolverines, Rockets pick up wins in NPBA

The Island Dimension and Development Wolverines took down the Breezes High Flyers 86-78 in New Providence Basketball Association (NPBA) Division I action at the A.F. Adderley Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

In Division II action, it was the Sun Oil Rockets who got the better of the Sports Center Elites, 103-92, in the earlier game that night.

Wolverines 86, High Flyers 78

Dominique Fernander finished with 20 points and 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double for the Wolverines as they defeated the High Flyers 86-78.

The Wolverines now have a 6-6 win-loss record on the season. The High Flyers are now 9-3.

Tomeko Moxey chipped in with 20 points and nine rebounds for the Wolverines.

After trailing at the end of the third quarter 64-61, the Wolverines found a way to claw

themselves back into the game.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Wolverines went on a 7-1 run to take a 68-65 lead on a Fernander and-one play with 8:41 remaining in the game.

Jeremy Neely, who finished with a game-high 27 points for his High Flyers, connected on a layup to give his team a 72-69 lead with 7:25 remaining in the game.

Like they did earlier in the fourth quarter, the Wolverines went on another run to get out of the hole.

This time they went on a 13-0 run that was capped off with a layup by Garvin Lightbourne with just a little over three minutes remaining in the game. They went up 82-72.

The High Flyers were unable to come back from that 10-point deficit as the Wolverines won 86-78.

The Wolverines shot 42 percent from the field. They out-muscled the High Flyers 58-50 on the glass.

Tonight’s Division I game will see the University of The Bahamas Mingoes (9-2) go up against the Leno Regulators (4-8) at 9 p.m.

 Rockets 103, Elites 92

It was a high-scoring game between the Rockets (10-3) and the Elites (3-9) but it was the Rockets’ defense that led them to a 103-92 victory.

The Rockets have five players scoring in double digits with Lerecus Armbrister leading the way with 20 points and three steals.

After going down 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, the Rockets had to find a way to take the lead.

With 7:15 remaining in the second quarter, the Rockets took a 10-point lead that was punctuated by a Collin Storr dunk. That was the end of a 12-3 run the by the Rockets who went up 31-21.

As the quarter went on, the Rockets took their largest lead of 21 points when Cameron Chery converted all three of his free throws after being fouled on a three-pointer attempt. They led 48-27 with 2:22 remaining in the first half.

The Elites were able to cut the lead down to 16 points at the end of the first half where the Rockets led 53-37 after winning the quarter 35-18.

That quarter proved to be the Elites’ downfall as they were not able to climb out from that hole. The Rockets managed to hold on to win 103-92.

Leading the way for the Elites was Tario McKenzie, who scored a game-high 21 points. He also led his team with eight rebounds.

The High Flyers (4-8) and the Your Essential Store Giants (11-0) will face each other in Division II action at 7 p.m.
