Police said yesterday that they found the body of a woman in waters off Stokes Cabana on Yamacraw Beach yesterday morning.
Chief Superintendent Solomon Cash said the woman appeared to have blunt force trauma to her head and abrasions on her neck.
He said the woman appeared to be in her early to mid-20s.
Cash said police received information shortly after 7 a.m. from concerned citizens that the body of a partially nude woman was in waters off Yamacraw Beach.
He said emergency medical services were called to the scene and removed the body from the water.
“Officers examining the body noticed some injuries which suggest that they may be caused by blunt force,” Cash said at the scene.
“We don’t know the motive behind this latest homicide. Of course, we suspect that the body may have been there for quite some time, like seven hours, based on the condition of the body.
“We are appealing to members of the public who would visit this area at times, if they have any information to contact the police.”
He added that police are “exploring the possibility that she may have been sexually assaulted”.
Cash said police believe, based on physical evidence at the scene, that the woman was killed in the same area.
He said they currently have no leads because the victim has yet to be identified.
“There are no leads that we can speak to, but again, we’ll have to look at the victimology,” he said.
“And we have not yet identified who the victim is, so of course coming out of the victimology we may be able to determine exactly what this is all about and even more so establishing a motive behind this homicide.”
The incident brings the murder count for 2019 to 90.
