Work together for a brighter future of China-Bahamas relations

Today, October 1, 2020, marks the 71st anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

During the past 71 years, under the strong leadership of the Communist Party of China, China has undergone enormous changes and achieved brilliant progresses as witnessed by the whole world.

China has become the second largest economy with per capita GDP exceeding US$10,000. The Chinese people are on a new journey of national rejuvenation with full confidence.

This year is an extraordinary year for mankind.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought tremendous impacts and challenges to the world.

Under the guidance and deployment of President Xi Jinping, the Chinese government adheres to the concept of putting its people and their lives front and center, and co-ordinates to advance the epidemic prevention and control with economic and social development.

The whole country has united as one and made major strategic achievements in the fight against COVID-19.

At the same time, with an open, transparent and responsible attitude, China has actively participated in international co-operation in COVID-19 response, held no reservations about sharing control and clinical experience, and done all it could to provide assistance to the international community.

Chinese wisdom and strength has contributed to the global efforts to fight against COVID-19.

In the second quarter of this year, China’s GDP grew by 3.2 percent , becoming the first major economy to recover since the breakout of COVID-19, which demonstrates the strong resilience and development potential of China’s economy.

From January to August, a total of 7.81 million new urban jobs were created, 27,000 new foreign-invested enterprises were established, and the recovery of the economic and social activities accelerated.

The major strategic achievements that China has made once again demonstrate the great strengths of the CPC’s leadership and the system of socialism with Chinese characteristics, and demonstrate China’s sense of responsibility as a major country.

Facing the future, the Chinese government and people have the confidence and capability to cope with various risks and challenges.

China stands ready to work with countries around the world to co-ordinate the advancement of the epidemic prevention and control and the economic development and make contributions to an early victory over the virus and global economic recovery.

This year marks the 75th anniversary of the United Nations.

President Xi Jinping delivered an important speech at the High-Level Meeting to Commemorate the anniversary and reviewed the extraordinary journey this organization has traveled over the ensuing 75 years.

He put forward four major suggestions including “the UN must stand firm for justice, uphold the rule of law, promote co-operation, and focus on real action”, which systematically answered the question in the new era: What kind of UN is needed for the world?

China was the first to sign on the Charter of the United Nations.

It is a founding member of the UN and the only developing country that takes a permanent seat on the Security Council.

China will always uphold multilateralism, firmly defend the UN’s central role in international affairs, and act as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and an upholder of the international order.

History and practice have proved that mankind is a community with a shared future, solidarity and co-operation is the only right way in the world.

China will continue to follow the path of peaceful development, unswervingly open wider to the world, expand mutually beneficial co-operation with other countries, firmly safeguard the multilateral trading system, promote to build a community with a shared future, and make unremitting efforts to create a better future for mankind.

This year is also the 23rd anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and The Bahamas.

Over the 23 years, the political mutual trust between the two countries has been strengthened, economic and trade co-operation has been expanded, and people-to-people exchanges has been deepened.

China attaches great importance to the development of China-Bahamas relations, appreciates that The Bahamas has always adhered to the One-China Principle, and stands ready to expand our mutually beneficial co-operation and promote the steady development of bilateral relations.

Since the outbreak of the COVID-19, China and The Bahamas have stood by each other to tide over the difficulties, adding a new chapter to the China-Bahamas friendship.

China has organized two video conferences to share information and experience, and provided material and technical assistance to the Caribbean countries including The Bahamas. So far, China has donated five batches of medical supplies to The Bahamas, which has played an important role in helping The Bahamas fight against COVID-19.

We are glad to see that the economic and trade co-operation between our countries has not been interrupted by the pandemic and the two sides are exploring innovative approaches to facilitate co-operation.

In line with the COVID-19 health and safety measures and through hard work of Chinese and Bahamian employees, The Pointe project is nearing completion. We believe this project will contribute to the social and economic recovery in The Bahamas.

The Bahamas Chamber of Commerce and business people have actively participated in the China Canton Fair and the China International Fair for Trade in Services virtually.

The competent authorities of our two countries are also actively seeking co-operation in human resources training through online methods.

At present, The Bahamas is countering the second wave of the virus.

China will continue to provide assistance within its capacity to support The Bahamas in its fight against the virus and promotion of economic recovery.

We believe that with the joint efforts of the government and the people, The Bahamas will defeat the virus and revive the momentum of economic and social development.

As a Chinese saying goes, good friends feel close even when they are thousands of miles apart.

China and The Bahamas are good friends and partners.

China will work with the government and the people of The Bahamas to further expand bilateral exchanges and co-operation in various fields, strengthen communication and co-ordination in international and regional affairs.

Together, we will make even greater progress in China-Bahamas relations and deliver more benefits to the two peoples.
